How to Prepare for a Spinal MRI

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging procedure that produces finely detailed images of the spine using radio waves and strong magnets. Even though the process is easy and safe, a little planning can make sure that everything goes as planned.

Before the MRI

Before your MRI, your doctor will ask about your medical history, including any surgeries or conditions that may affect the scan. You must inform them if you have any metal implants like pacemakers, artificial joints, or screws, as these can interfere with the MRI’s magnetic field.

Also, let them know about any medications you’re taking, as some may need to be adjusted or paused before the procedure.

On the day of your MRI, wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or snaps, and remove all jewelry, including watches and piercings. Some facilities may provide a gown to ensure no metal objects are on your body.

In most cases, you can eat and drink normally before your MRI, but if your doctor plans to use a contrast dye, you may need to avoid eating for a few hours beforehand. Your doctor will provide specific instructions based on your needs.

During the MRI

During the MRI, it’s important to stay as still as possible to ensure clear images of your spine.

The procedure typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being scanned. If you’re prone to anxiety or discomfort in confined spaces, you may want to discuss the possibility of taking a mild sedative beforehand.

You’ll be in constant communication with the MRI technician, who will provide instructions and check on you throughout the scan. Most machines come equipped with a call button you can press if you feel uncomfortable.
